Camp has been an American tradition for over a century. Over 500 million children have participated. Each year over 10 million American children attend camp, many of them are returning campers. In many ways summer camp is a part of the quintessential childhood experience.  It’s where, transitioning from childhood to adolescence, these youngsters truly start to figure themselves out.

It’s about sing-alongs, camp fires, talent shows, Jell-O and mashed potatoes, homesickness, pranks, first loves and that first, sweet taste of independence.

“It’s a camp thing,” camp kids will tell you.  Non-campers just don’t, won’t, and can’t get it.  And they’re right.  I don’t get it.  But it sounds awesome.

Here I am nearing 30, settling down planning a family.  Looking back, it feels like I missed out on something truly great.  Summer camp is something that my friends and I never experienced, but is something I wish we did.  The closest I’ve gotten to summer camp is MeatballsSleepaway CampFriday the 13thSalute Your Shorts, and Wet Hot American Summer.

So, with Summer Camp on the brain, I’ve starting a project and I need help from all you former counselors and campers.  Through this blog you get to help me and I get to “attend” camp vicariously through you while you can share your hilarious, heart-warming, tragic, embarrassing, naughty and just down-right awesome bits of nostalgia.

If you’ve attended sleepaway Summer Camp go ahead and send me your stories making sure to include your first name, where you’re from, what camp you attended (or at least the camp’s state) and I’ll publish them on the blog.  It’s that simple!  Check out the about page for more specific contact info.

I can’t really help too much since all I can remember is a raccoon in the outhouse. And my camp counselor stepping on the spring peeper I caught (and accidentally dropped).

I am excited to see what people come up with though so I’ll be following!

    Good luck!

Yeah, I’m definitely trying to get the word out there since so much of this is about other people’s experiences. If you know anybody who also went to camp, send ’em over! 🙂
